      Officer Receives Award for Kentucky Fugitive Arrest

      Knoxville Mayor Daniel Brown and Police Chief David Rausch named Officer Jason Artymovich the April Officer of the Month for the Knoxville Police Department. Officer Artymovich has been with KPD since November 2007.

      Chief Rausch said that on April 21, 2011, at approximately 10:05 a.m., the E-911 Center received a call from a concerned citizen reporting that the suspect wanted for a double shooting in Kentucky was inside the McDonald's located at 322 Merchants Road. The caller indicated he had seen the picture of the suspect on the news and was positive this was the wanted individual.

      When Officer Artymovich arrived on the scene he approached the suspect who was sitting alone at a table drinking coffee. The suspect produced a driver's license and had memorized the information on the license, but the picture did not match the suspect. When asked for another form of identification the male could not produce one. The suspect was taken into custody for further investigation.

      Chief Rausch said, "Upon search of the individual the suspect's real license was located. The ID indicated this was the suspect wanted in Kentucky for the double shooting."

      A search of the victim's duffle bag produced numerous pills including a pill bottle that came from one of the shooting victim's family members. After positively identifying the suspect, Kentucky investigators were informed of the arrest and responded to Knoxville to continue their investigation.

      Chief Rausch said, "Officer Artymovich did an outstanding job of working off a tip from a caller who was positive this was the wanted suspect. His persistence in dealing with the suspect resulted in a violent person being taken off the streets of Knoxville while greatly assisting the Kentucky State Police with a violent crime investigation."
