Urban Wilderness Challenge Set for April 16

Posted: 02/25/2011
Outdoor enthusiasts will have a chance to explore Knoxville's urban wilderness in the heart of the city with two races set for April 16, 2011.

Two exciting races to choose from:

The Adventure Race offers a challenging course for teams of three who will bike, run, paddle, swim, orienteer and face a few surprises as they maneuver a unique course in and around downtown Knoxville. The race will last six to twelve hours. The Adventure Race is capped at 60 teams. The Citizen's Race takes teams through undiscovered trails and forests on foot, bike and by water on a less-technically difficult route. The race will last two to four hours and is a great family adventure. The Citizen's Race is capped at 100 teams.

The event aims to gain support for the proposed Urban Wilderness and Historic Corridor, a 1,000-acre recreational venue along Knoxville's south waterfront. Legacy Parks Foundation is championing the effort to connect ten city parks, three civil war forts, four wildlife areas and forested lands through a series of trails and greenway. All proceeds from the Urban Wilderness Challenge benefit that effort.

But it's more than a race - it's a daylong adventure for participants and spectators alike!

Activities for spectators and the outdoor-curious include:

Group bike rides Guided wildflower hikes Boat rides Bike and boat rentals The climbing wall Music under the stars
