The City of Knoxville will begin various maintenance and minor demolition projects at Lakeshore Park, which may alter some entrances and traffic at the park.

Within the next two weeks, the City is scheduled to demolish the long-closed swimming pool and pool house, which was used by Lakeshore Mental Health Institute, and sections of fencing along the greenway. Additionally, Public Service crews will be performing mowing, landscape maintenance, tree trimming and dead tree removal.

While crews are busy with the work, the park will remain open. However, park users are asked to take precaution and be aware of crews working in the park and heavy equipment in use.

The state closed LMHI in June after Tennessee Department of Mental Health Commissioner Douglas Varney proposed closing the mental health facility and shifting to community-based mental health services. The state will continue to provide some services at facilities on the property. Additional land and buildings on the site will be turned over to the City of Knoxville in the future.

The park has 110 acres of playground and open space, paved greenway trails, six baseball/softball fields and two soccer fields.
