The sky was aglow like the Northern Lights. The crowd was filled with anticipation. And, the rain held off just long enough for the City of Knoxville to ring in 2022, unlike it ever has before.
For the first time ever, the Sunsphere took center stage at the City’s New Year’s Eve celebration, as a lighted ball, 8 feet in diameter, was dropped from the iconic structure at midnight.
NYE at the Sunsphere by the Numbers:
• Estimated 6000 in attendance
• 2 hours of Live Music
• 3 Food Vendors
• 8 ft. Diameter Ball, with 326 lights
• 1 electrifying laser show
The ball drop was the culmination of an incredible New Year’s Eve at the Sunsphere celebration that drew thousands downtown. The new location also helped pay special tribute to this year’s 40th anniversary of the 1982 World’s Fair.
The family-friendly event attracted people of all ages to enjoy live music, a DJ, food trucks, fireworks, and a laser show.
“We were so pleased with the turnout, ” said Kyndra Brewer, Director of the City’s Office of Special Events. “It was an unforgettable night ushering in 2022 at World’s Fair Park. My team is already looking forward to next year, and this location was so successful it will become our new norm for New Year’s Eve!
“We are also so appreciative of all our partners that helped make this an incredible event, including our new presenting sponsor Lowe’s. We hope that we can join forces with them on more projects in the future.”
