Departments that fulfill the City's committment to public safety have begun convening for a series of public meetings with neighbors in all areas of Knoxville.
The first Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Meeting was held Thursday, Feb. 24, at Logan Temple AME Zion Church. Pastor Sam Brown welcomed attendees and handed the microphone to Neighborhood Coordinator Debbie Sharp, who helped serve as the evening’s emcee.
The Knoxville Police Department was represented by Officer John Morgan, who serves as the Neighborhood Watch Coordinator. He shared a wealth of information and several good reminders about precautions neighbors can take around their homes, property and vehicles. He was joined by Lt. Gordon Gwathney, who has served the neighborhoods of East Knoxville for many years.
“The purpose of these meetings is to discuss public safety matters with residents, address ongoing concerns and provide available resources,” said Morgan. “Many neighborhood crimes are crimes of opportunity that residents can help prevent with simple, common-sense practices.”
Officer Morgan shared data showing that many car thefts occur when drivers leave their doors unlocked and their keys in the ignition.
Morgan also demonstrated how residents can use the LexusNexus
Community Crime Map to monitor the crimes being reported in Knoxville.
Additional speakers included:
