Pursuant to § 1411 of the Charter of the City of Knoxville and Tenn. Code Ann. § 10-7-503, et. seq., and subject to the limitations contained therein and any other applicable law, public records of the City of Knoxville shall be open for public inspection.

The mission of the Department of Communications is to provide accurate information to citizens and the media in a timely manner.

Dedicated to promoting and supporting various offices within the City of Knoxville, the department also provides information on government services, mayoral initiatives and City-sponsored activities.

The department is responsible for developing strategic communications to help advance the goals and projects of the City while also keeping City neighborhoods and residents connected and involved.

The department also works closely with Special Events and Government Affairs to meet key objectives.

In addition, the department maintains the City's website, updates social media and provides ceremonial documents such as proclamations and certificates.
