This time of the year many people long to be Home for the Holidays, but as we know finding affordable housing has become a bit of a challenge here in East Tennessee and across the country.
For Knoxville to thrive, families need safe, affordable places to live and that is why Mayor Indya Kincannon has continued to not only focus on, but enhance City support of affordable housing.
At a housing summit in late fall, Mayor Kincannon talked about the City’s efforts to work with partners to preserve, restore, and grow the local housing supply and to help families stay in their homes.
In 2021, the Mayor established the Knoxville Affordable Housing Fund, a 10-year, $50 Million investment of local funds in safe, high quality and affordable housing. To date, City investments have helped create 1,500 new, affordable homes for Knoxville families. In addition, through the Knox Housing Assistance Program, the City helped thousands of families stay in their homes.
But, as the Mayor continues to stress, more needs to be done.
•
Caswell Manor, a new permanent supportive development by VMC, will provide a home for 48 people.
•
The City is working with Knoxville Leadership Foundation to support a proposal for
Callahan Flats – which will provide another 58 units of supportive housing, including for families
•
And, the City is currently working with KCDC to explore a partnership that would fairly quickly
convert a local hotel into permanent supportive housing for yet another 100 individuals.
