Knoxville Job Well Done
Open Houses Bring Neighbors, Partners Together

Community Open HouseDozens of City employees across several departments pitched in to successfully staff four community open house events in the first six months of 2023. Their work is this month’s Knoxville Job Well Done!

If you attended one of these events, stood at a table next to foam-core map or rendering – thank you! You did a great job representing the City and the multitude of public and private projects that are happening in neighborhoods all over Knoxville.

Look for some familiar faces and give kudos to everyone who helped make these important connections with City residents.

City Ambassadors Program Wraps Up Another Successful Session

Spring AmbassadorsThis spring the City of Knoxville wrapped up another successful Ambassadors program!

This is the 9th class of Ambassadors since the program started in 2016 and 125 employees have been through the program.

Under the guidance of 311 Director Russ Jensen and Deputy Chief Operating Officer Chip Barry, 16 employees from a wide variety of departments completed the 4 day program.

Ambassadors are chosen from department head nominations to help employees learn more about everything involved in City government.

Staffers have to be employed for at least 6 months to participate, but as this spring’s class demonstrated even longtime employees have something to gain from the program!

One 20 year employee said, “I never knew half the things the City did until participating in this program.”

Checking in on Summer in the City 2023 Interns

Summer in the City InternsThe City’s Summer in the City interns are halfway through their two-month program.

Embedded in their departments, they are working on a variety of projects.

During FridayConnect sessions, they’re getting out into the community—learning how organizations like Beck Cultural Exchange Center and The Muse serve our residents and marching to celebrate freedom in the Juneteenth parade.

See what else they’ve been achieving.

Protected Bike Lanes Installed on Broadway

Protected Bike LaneOn the Father's Day and Juneteenth weekend, City crews went the extra mile to enhance the safety of a third of a mile of bicycle lanes on North Broadway between West Depot Avenue and Tyson Street.

So as to not disrupt traffic, the Transportation Engineering crew gave up their Saturday night and worked into the early Sunday morning. Thank you for your service! #KnoxvilleJobWellDone

The stretch of Broadway is just one-third of a mile long, but it's a critical connector used by large numbers of bicyclists to reach dozens of destinations or other bike corridors. It's a favorite path of University of Tennessee students who bike in from North Knoxville and cut through World's Fair Park to access campus.

Buffered bike lanes were converted to protected bike lanes. The enhancement means that highly visible delineators and green markings on the pavement have been added.

Did you know that the City now has 21.5 miles of bike lane infrastructure?

Click below and read more about what Transportation Engineering is doing to protect bicyclists and to reduce conflicts between motorists and pedal-powered commuters.

Who Can It Be Now
Who Can It Be Now Who collects coffee cups, works outside and is originally from Naples, Florida? He’s this month’s Mystery Employee!

More clues: He has worked for the City of Knoxville for 12 years, almost as long as he’s lived in East Tennessee.

His role with the City puts him in contact with all kinds of residents and visitors, which suits his cheerful demeanor.

And one of his many favorite foods is fresh guacamole.

Think you can identify your colleague?
