Walking is one of the easiest ways for residents of all ages to get regular exercise. A project by the Parks and Recreation team and the Knox County Health Department is helping visitors to one local park measure their miles.
The new signage posted near the tennis courts at Edgewood Park helps neighbors know how their steps add up to miles.
These community driven walking routes are designed to help increase physical activity of community members and provide clear, safe, and accessible routes within the neighborhood.
The Edgewood Park signs were made with input from neighbors and based on routes that they already use and find favorable. The three route options offer various distances, feature important highlights in the neighborhood, such as community gardens, and describe the health benefits of walking.
The project also engaged a neighbor who is a graphic designer to design the signs.
KPRD and KCHD hope to replicate this approach in other Knoxville parks, so stay tuned for more info!
