The Mayor of Knoxville wants Knoxvillians to remember that the City provides a program so residents can properly dispose of their American flags.
Public Law 94-344, known as the Flag Code, prescribes that the flag, when it is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. However, this process is not feasible for most city residents.
You may dispose of your American Flags at the following locations:
• Flags may be brought to the City's Solid Waste Facility at 1033 Elm St. (off the I-275 Baxter exit) and either given to the scale house operator or brought to the Household Hazardous Waste area and given to an operator there.
• Flags may be brought to any of the 6 Knox County Senior Centers and given to the front desk personnel. Click the following link to find each location: Knox County Senior Centers.
• Flags may be brought to any of the Recycling drop-off centers listed below and given to the Goodwill attendant:
NORTH: Goodwill Store - 5412 Pleasant Ridge Rd.
SOUTH: Chapman Highway - 225 W. Moody Ave.
EAST: Chilhowee Park/Magnolia Ave - 210 Alice St.
WEST: Cedar Bluff - 341 Parkvillage Rd.
DOWNTOWN: Old City - 227 Willow Ave.
Flags are delivered to agencies such as the Elks Lodge and are respectfully destroyed through burning.
