January 24, 2024, dozens of people came together to share stories and celebrate the 30-plus year career of Knoxville Police Assistant Chief Mark Fortner.
Fortner started his law enforcement career at just 19 years old, as a police officer in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
He joined KPD in 1993 and served the department in numerous capacities in his 31-year-career —even stepping in as Acting Chief for a short stint in 2022.
He also served as a patrol Lieutenant, the Central Business District commander, the Executive Officer to the Chief of Police, and on the Special Operations Squad for 25-plus years.
“For the last 30-plus years, I got to do something where I was able to help people and make a difference,” Chief Fortner said. “The department was good to me, and I will miss the people and being here on a daily basis. Outside of playing first base for Cleveland, there’s nothing else I would have rather done.”
Chief Noel and Mayor Kincannon both expressed their appreciation and gratitude during Fortner's retirement celebration last month.
“ I will be forever grateful for Chief Fortner’s leadership and service,” said Mayor Indya Kincannon. ““I leaned on him during some big challenges and transitions, and he was always there for me and the people of this great city.”
“ I am so grateful to Chief Fortner for all that he did for our organization and the Knoxville community,” Chief Paul Noel said. “ He was an invaluable member of our leadership team who had a positive influence on the careers of countless members of the KPD. He gave his life to the KPD. We will miss him dearly and can never repay him for all of his contributions.”
Fortner is also known for his dry sense of humor, quick wit and being a calming force among his colleagues.
On a personal note, he loves baseball and boxing, and his adventurous side led him to some amazing places already, like Mt. Kilimanjaro. We can’t wait to see what he gets into in retirement, and we wish him the best!
