Starting at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 19, KUB will begin a 2.5-month project to upgrade the natural gas and water systems serving customers along and near Cumberland Avenue.
Initially, through 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, the work will require the complete closure of Cumberland Avenue between 11th Street and 16th Street.
In addition, the adjacent sidewalk on the north side of Cumberland Avenue will also be closed. Cumberland Avenue will be inaccessible from James Agee Street and 13th Street as part of this closure. Electronic message boards and signage will be in place to indicate detour routes.
Then, from May 22 through Aug. 8, both westbound lanes of Cumberland and the north-side sidewalk will be closed, with traffic flow shifted to one lane in each direction using the eastbound lanes.
Another full closure will occur briefly at the end of the upgrade project, as work concludes and all the lanes and sidewalks are reopened.
