First Creek at Austin will be in the spotlight twice this month, as progress continues on the affordable neighborhood coming to fruition just east of downtown Knoxville.
On Aug. 1, 2024, City officials will break ground on Phase 3 of Knoxville's Community Development Corporation's project, which includes 161 new housing units, including 50 supportive housing units for low-income seniors.
Later in the month, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held to celebrate the completion of Phase 2, which includes 180 units of housing, a fitness center and indoor community spaces.
The City has contributed $14.1 million in sitewide infrastructure support, including utilities, sidewalks and new roads.
When the neighborhood, originally built in 1941 as Austin Homes, is complete, it will include 428 housing units.
The events this month continue a series of gatherings to mark progress at First Creek at Austin.
In February 2022, neighbors gathered to celebrate NBA player, coach and famed AE Roadrunner Elston Turner as they named a new road in the neighborhood after him.
Officials cut the ribbon on Phase 1 on May 11, 2022. And the redevelopment project earned a 2024 Tennessee’s Best award in the neighborhood stabilization category from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency.
