Access boxes are required in all new and existing construction where an alarm system or sprinkler system is present or may be installed. Hazard of contents and type of occupancy may also require the installation of access boxes. In accordance with the 2018 Edition of the IFC, Section 506.1, Key Boxes: The Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) shall have authority to require an access box(es) to be installed in an accessible location where access to or within a structure or area is difficult because of security.
