Knoxville Job Well Done
Knoxville Job Well DonePurchasing Delivers Successful DBE Awards

Kudos to our Purchasing Department for putting on another successful Diversity Business Enterprise (DBE) Awards ceremony on Sept. 19 at Lakeshore Park.

This ninth annual event welcomed an enthusiastic crowd of approximately 100 local business owners and their employees, plus City department directors and staff, to enjoy a delicious breakfast from Soul Elegance Catering accept awards, and cheer for award recipients.

Assistant Purchasing Agent Penny Owens and Pamela Cotham served as emcees. Early in the ceremony, Penny received empathetic chuckles from attendees when she announced that the award plaques were not on site due to supply chain issues — a universal challenge among businesses large and small. The team behind this #KnoxvilleJobWellDone rolls with the punches.

Thanks to the City and ASM staff members who nominated this year’s DBE winners and so eloquently explained their decisions on videos made by videographer Shawn Davis. It’s clear how much these DBEs do to serve City departments by providing goods and services and excellent customer communication. It makes a big difference, and we are grateful.

UT Game Day Safety: Thank You, City Employees!

Game Day WorkCelebrating Vol football victories sure is a lot of fun.

But helping the University of Tennessee in putting on a party for 100,000 fans at Neyland Stadium – plus, hosting all the pre-game tailgating, family gatherings and downtown revelry – requires all-hands-on-deck staffing from many City departments.

Home-game Saturdays are physically demanding for the Engineering Sign Shop and Signal crews and the 100-plus KPD officers who manage traffic before and after the games.

Not showing up is simply not an option. Public safety requires the planning expertise, muscle and see-the-job-through-til-it’s-done dedication of our City professionals.

"Home football games make for really long days,” says Public Service Central Manager Robbie Corum, whose crew sets up the Vol Walk barricades and picks up 3 tons of garbage on football Saturdays.

“But having a dedicated crew that enjoys interacting with people and is excited to be working the game – that helps a lot. Our team really cares about keeping downtown and Fort Sanders tidy and looking their best."

Promise Fulfilled: New Urgent Care In North Knox

Get Well Now ClinicEarlier this month, Mayor Indya Kincannon, Cherokee Health Systems and other community leaders celebrated another important addition to the former St. Mary’s campus.

Thanks to the City's vision, and amazing partnerships, this site which could have sat vacant for years is now home to:

• The City’s new Public Safety Complex
• LMU
• The first EmPATH unit in Tennessee
• And now, this new, and sorely needed Urgent Health Care facility

The Get Well Now Walk-in Clinic is being run by Cherokee Health Systems and is helping to fill a void that has been in this community for years.

“I know this will bring peace of mind to families in North Knoxville,” said Mayor Kincannon. “ It will also increase convenience, and reduce the number of long and sometimes unnecessary waits in the ER. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”

Who Can It Be Now
Who Can it Be NowWhich of your colleagues has worked for the City for 21 years and has also traveled to every state in the U.S. but one?

This month’s mystery employee works closely with residents who have experienced life-changing events.

She’s an adventure seeker -- having hiked to the top of Diamond Head in Oahu, Hawaii, and swam with stingrays in the Cayman Islands.

She also love oysters!

Can you guess who it is?
