In case you missed it, this week, Mayor Indya Kincannon publicly thanked our City’s first responders by declaring October 28th as First Responders Day in Knoxville.

 City Team Expertly Managed Explosives Crisis
When a smoldering steel box loaded full with 550 broken sticks of commercial grade emulsion explosives and 197 blasting caps turned up at a recycling business, nimble (and brave) first responders immediately jumped into action.
A diverse team evacuated the nearby Lonsdale community and began the harrowing work of disabling the explosives.
On the front line were the Bomb Squad technicians, police officers and firefighters.
But in support, KAT bus operators helped evacuate residents. Public Service brought dump trucks to the site, to help limit the effects of a blast if the worst had happened. KEMA deployed its new on-scene response command vehicle, with the latest technology, cameras and communications equipment.
Because of the speed and skill of so many City employees, the incident ended with no injuries and no property damage. The explosives were rendered safe.

Exceptional Employees Honored
It was a jam-packed Small Assembly Room on October 3, as City leaders recognized their Employees of the Year.
The ceremony shined a light on 25 employees, many of whom work behind the scenes, and really go above and beyond for the City!
Their supervisors and directors describe the group as respectful, passionate, helpful, full of integrity, and top performers.

Helping Out After Helene
Hurricane Helene left a path of destruction from Florida to Virginia, with our neighbors to the Northeast being hardest hit.
Unsure of the storm’s path, local emergency crews started meeting before the storm even moved into our region, preparing for potentially high winds, rain, and flooding. While Knoxville was spared the brunt of the storm, our crews were quick to jump in to help any way we could.
So many individuals also donated their time, money and resources to help—really living up to that Volunteer Spirit.

 This month’s mystery employee has been with the City for 12 years, which is how long he’s lived in East Tennessee.
He is one of six siblings -- his five sisters still live where he grew up in Indiana.
And his favorite meal is his grandmother’s German Spaetzles, an egg noodle dish that’s the ideal comfort food.
One more clue: your colleague is a runner! He ran his fastest 5k in just under 16 minutes.

 On Oct. 24, our Parks and Rec team threw a Halloween Bash for the approximately 400 young people who attend afterschool programs.
The event was full of costumes, pumpkins and treats – including Andy’s Custard, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and s'mores.
Congratulations to our Parks and Rec team and the other City departments that helped make this season extra special for our afterschool kids.
