What is backdoor service? Backdoor service means the driver collects your garbage (and recycling, if applicable) directly from your home instead of at the curb or edge of the alley.
Who qualifies for free backdoor service? Backdoor service is reserved for those 75 or older or those with a medical need. All residents of the household must meet one of the two requirements and all must submit an application.
How do I apply for backdoor service? Call 311 to request an application. Complete both sides of the application, provide the necessary documentation (a copy of the driver’s license or a doctor’s signature), and return the form to the City of Knoxville. Once approved, you will be notified and backdoor service will start thereafter.
I've been approved for backdoor service. Where should I place my cart? Backdoor service does not necessarily mean your cart sits next to your backdoor. The cart may be placed next to the house where it is convenient for you--however,
do not place your cart up or down any stairs,
under any roof (including decks, carports, etc.), or behind any
fences. These rules prevent liability issues and protect the safety of the sanitation
worker.
Is there an option to pay for backdoor service if I do not qualify based on age or medical reason? No. The City of Knoxville's hauling contractor, Waste Connections, no longer offers paid backdoor service.
*If you are approved for backdoor service but you move to a different address, or a new resident moves into the home with you, please call 311 so that we can update our records.
