Locals can enjoy a free concert this Sunday, July 30, performed by the Knoxville Community Band at the Clayton Center at Maryville College. The show starts at 3 p.m.
The concert will feature a variety of music with many pieces that should be familiar to listeners, from marches and polkas to themes from popular movies.
“At the Movies – the Classics” will showcase “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz” and “Also Sprach Zarathustra” from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
Other music will range from “Pie in the Face Polka” by Henry Mancini to “The Purple Carnival,” a march by Harry L. Alford, and “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” from the opera “Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner.
Several different instrumental sections of the band will be featured. Kerry Morrison will play the clarinet solo in “Pie in the Face Polka.” Trumpet soloists for “Bugler’s Holiday” will be Mark Boring, Jennifer Fields, Joshua Hunt, Joel Tillman and Fred Wagner.
The band is directed by Larry Hicks, a retired band director from Heritage High School in the Blount County schools system. Mark Boring, who also is retired from the Blount County system, is the assistant director.
The Knoxville Community Band is comprised of instrumentalists in the community who like to play, and most have been playing since grammar school. Some players are band directors who like to take time out from their own bands to keep in practice on their major instruments, and others are professionals in the community who learned to play in school and don’t want to lose their expertise. All are volunteers, and all play because they love music.
The band is sponsored by the Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department. The group plays year round at festivals and other special events and performs a series of outdoor concerts during the summer. New members with expertise on wind or percussion instruments are welcome. Practices are from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at Northwest Middle School.
