It’s official: With plenty of sunshine and smiles, the new Cumberland Avenue was dedicated Thursday, August 17, 2017.
Gov. Bill Haslam, who started the reconstruction project when he was Mayor, helped with the cutting of an orange ribbon. It was great to see a big crowd of enthusiastic Cumberland Avenue merchants and stakeholders.

The 28-month top-to-bottom reconstruction of Cumberland Avenue has wrapped up, apart from tree plantings and some final work details. The project finished on time and within budget.
Cumberland Avenue between 17th and 22nd streets has been transformed into a safer, more pedestrian-friendly corridor with new utility infrastructure, wider sidewalks, improved traffic flow, a raised median and left-turn lanes at intersections.
The public investment of $25 million has helped leverage more than $190 million in private investment.
