MESSAGE FROM MAYOR MADELINE ROGERO
"I am proud that the City of Knoxville is presenting this endeavor to educate the community about accessibility in the built environment and why it makes such a difference for people with disabilities. When I think about people with disabilities and how barriers to access create barriers to opportunities, I know that we have a lot of work to do within our community. People without disabilities often take for granted the opportunity to go to the grocery store, visit the doctor's office, or use the public transit system without barriers. It is my hope that you will leave this event with a better understanding of accessibility and that it is much more than a "building code requirement." It is a tool that provides a more level playing field for all of us - both with and without disabilities."
- City of Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero
SPONSOR'S VIEWPOINT
"United Elevator Services chose to be a part of East Tennessee Accessibility Symposium as an effective way to reach both architects and end users for accessibility products. We were able to reach out to those with other impairments who would benefit from our products. This symposium showcases products, like ours, that are designed to assist people in making their world more accessible for everyday activities. This forum also allowed us to present our products to different agencies across East Tennessee who in turn are able to suggest our services to their clients. The East Tennessee Accessibility Symposium is one of the most effective ways we have found to introduce our company, products and services into the marketplace. "
- John Tolar, Manager at United Elevator Services
PARTICIPANT'S VIEWPOINT
"It was very informative to hear everyone's perspective on a project from architect to end user. Education is the first step to good design and many designers would benefit from the shared experiences of individuals with varied disabilities that the Accessibility Symposium had to offer. "
