Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Police Chief Sterling Owen named Cadet Kristen Key, Cadet Christopher Loveday, and Cadet Christopher Hutton the Knoxville Police Department's Civilian Employees of the Month for August.
Chief Owen said that on August 14, 2010, the cadets were posted to an assignment on Gay Street in support of the patrol division. While they were on their post they heard a radio call dispatched that an officer was down which was immediately followed by a request for emergency services to respond to the scene.
Chief Owen said, "Unaware of the nature of the injury nor the circumstances surrounding how the officer was injured, the cadets immediately responded to the scene to assist. Without any direction from a supervisor they began re-routing traffic and controlling the pedestrians which were crowding the area."
"The cadets reacted without regard for their own safety to help a fellow officer in need of assistance," said Chief Owen.
Mayor Haslam said, "We commend Cadet Key, Cadet Loveday, and Cadet Hutton for their desire to assist officers at the scene where an officer had been injured. Thank you for a job well done."
