Stephanie Welch was elected as City Councilwoman for the 1st District on November 7, 2017 and was sworn in on December 16, 2017.

Stephanie is the Vice President of Operations at the Great Schools Partnership, a local non-profit that works to create the best public schools in the south in Knoxville, Tennessee. In this role she leads the development and expansion of Knox County’s community schools initiative and oversees programs such as Parents as Teachers, Leaders for Readers and CodeTN.

Swearing in ceremonyPrior to joining Great Schools, Stephanie worked in local and regional public health in Knox County and East Tennessee for fifteen years, with a focus on community development, strategic planning, nutrition, physical activity, and health inequities. She has held multiple volunteer positions on boards and committees, including the Knoxville Zoning Ordinance Stakeholder Advisory Committee, City of Knoxville’s Better Building Board, and the Knoxville-Knox County Food Policy Council. 

Stephanie has also served in the United States Army Reserves for 18 years, and was mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007 and 2008. She is currently holds the rank of Major and is the Executive Officer for a Medical Support Unit in Chattanooga, Tennessee. 

Originally from New Hampshire, Stephanie moved to Knoxville in 1995 to attend the University of Tennessee, where she earned a dual master’s degree in Public Health and Nutrition. She lives in the Island Home Park Neighborhood with her dogs Suttree, Chester and Sprout. When not working, Stephanie makes time to run, bike, hike and practice yoga. She and her partner, Mark Jones, also enjoy traveling and spend time in “Down East” Maine each summer.
