TRAFFIC COURT PLUS

Knoxville’s City Court primarily handles traffic citations and parking tickets. Other city ordinance violations include alcohol (non-DUI), animal control, building & zoning codes, business regulations, environmental, noise, and ordinances involving personal behavior.

CITY COURT / MUNICIPAL COURT / TRAFFIC COURT

Municipal Court, also known as City Court, is a limited jurisdiction court authorized under Tennessee Code Annotated and the City of Knoxville Charter. With original jurisdiction over all cases involving violations of City Ordinances, the City Judge has authority to assess fines up to $50. About 300 Tennessee cities have Municipal Courts with varying authority and jurisdiction.

CITY COURT HOURS

Court Service Counter:

Monday through Friday - 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, the Service Counter re-opens at 5:00 p.m. with limited service during Night Court. The emphasis at the Service Counters during Night Court will focus on people coming out of the Courtroom. If the Front Service Counter is not open when you arrive, you may need to enter the Courtroom to let a Court Clerk in the Courtroom know you need only to make a payment or take care of other business at the Service Counter.

Court Sessions Begin:

Monday / Wednesday / Friday - 9:00 AM

Night Court Begins:

Tuesday / Thursday - 5:30 PM

The public is welcome at any time in City Court. Defendants are also welcome to appear in court and speak with the Judge regarding their citation(s), during the court's regular hours of operation. However, if pleading not guilty, you must appear on your scheduled court date. If you cannot appear on your scheduled court date, please contact our office and we will gladly reset your case on a date that is convenient for you and the citing Officer.

City Court is located at 1650 Huron Street in the Public Safety Complex with the Knoxville Police Department.

CITY COURT & GENERAL SESSIONS COURT

Is your ticket "PINK" or "YELLOW"? If so, and your ticket was issued in Knoxville, then you should probably be checking with General Sessions Court, not City Court. (Of course, if you are 17 years of age or younger, then you should go to Juvenile Court.) The standard color of a defendant's copy of a City Court Citation is GREEN!

Someone comes to City Court whose case is scheduled for General Sessions Court almost daily, and people show up over there who should be here. So, please read your ticket/Citation carefully. Note the following primary differences:

CITY COURT GENERAL SESSIONS
- "Green"
- Citations
- Knoxville Police Dept.
- plus UT Police & Codes Officers
- Located at SAFETY Bldg. w/KPD
- "Pink" or "Yellow" Citations*
- Sheriff's Dept. (County Police) & TN State Troopers
- Located at CITY/COUNTY Bldg.
- May be Arrested or have Booking Date

* KPD may also issue a Citation for General Sessions Court. When this occurs, KPD will cite the defendant with violation of a State Code (law) instead of a City Ordinance; the 'green' KPD Citation form will still be used.
