Central Street - Past and Future

Posted: 05/19/2008
Participate in Smart Trips Month by taking an afternoon walk along Central Street at 5:30 p.m. on May 21 to visit the past and see what's in store for the street.

Jack Neely, Metropulse writer and local historian, and Bob Whetsel, City of Knoxville's Director of Redevelopment, will lead the walk and the discussion along the way.

The walk will leave from the corner of Gay Street and Summit Hill Avenue.

The route begins by going east down Summit Hill before turning onto Central.

The walkers will travel along North Central through the Old City and cross Fifth Avenue near the old Knoxville High School before moving through Emory Place.

From there the walk will wind along Tyson Place next to Old Gray Cemetery before turning east (back toward Central) on Jennings where walkers will go by Ironwood Studios.

After making a left on Central the walk will continue to the Time Warp Tea Room near the intersection of Anderson Avenue.

From there the walkers will return to downtown via way of Broadway, Fifth Avenue and N. Gay Street.

If walking, make sure and wear comfortable shoes for this approximately 3-mile walk.
