Dr. Bob Encourages Locals to Get Out and Play

Posted: 07/26/2012
Dr. Bob Overholt launched the second feature in his monthly "Get Out and Play with Dr. Bob" series, a virtual tour and health guide to Knoxville parks, on WBIR TV-10.

"Get Out and Play with Dr. Bob" is a joint effort to raise awareness about neighborhood parks and to address Tennessee's rising childhood obesity epidemic. The series is presented by the Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center, Knoxville Parks and Recreation, the Legacy Park Foundation's Outdoor Knoxville Center, and WBIR TV-10.

PME Communications is producing the short "Get Out and Play" videos with Dr. Bob advising Knoxvillians on ways to stay active and healthy in our parks. The monthly videos are featured on the OutdoorKnoxville.com web site and are announced live each month on WBIR TV-10.

July's feature is Ijams Nature Center and Will Skelton Greenway in South Knoxville. Will Skelton Greenway connects 3.5 miles to approximately 1,000 acres of public land. Ijams Nature Center is a wildlife sanctuary that rests at the center of this greenway and provides over 10 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Bike rentals are available as well as canoe and paddleboard rentals on Mead's Quarry Lake.

Ijams has other breathtaking features including a football field-length boardwalk over the Tennessee River that highlights several bat caves, a kids play area with miniature cabins and fairy thicket houses, the Ross Marble Quarry, a large frog pond, and much more.

Will Skelton Greenway also connects to the TWRA Wildlife Management Area, which features acres of sunflower fields in July.

"Dr. Bob," as he is known to both patients and viewers, is host of the long-running Dr. Bob Show, which airs regionally on 10News2 and the East Tennessee PBS affiliate. He has been a member of the WBIR-TV family for more than 20 years, appearing twice each week on local news programs.
