The Animal Control Board recommends goals and objectives for the animal shelter. And recommends qualification requirements, specialized training courses, and continuing education program for animal shelter personnel.
In addition, the Board:
• Hears appeals and makes final decisions on appealed permits.
• Establishes minimum standards for the operation of any kennel, boarding facility, pet shop, pet retail establishment or pet dealership.
• Issues any such permits or provide written consent.
• Establishes minimum standards of operation and care for such animals maintained, exhibited, sold or displayed.
• Draft permit applications, draft permits, and set permit fees.
• Make recommendations to the Mayor concerning animal ordinances and any contract the City has with the animal shelter.
• Review the operations and financial status of the animal shelter.
• Submit a report on the operations and financial status of the animal shelter to City Council.
APPOINTMENT OF BOARD MEMBERS
The Animal Control Board has seven members. There is one representative from the Zoo Knoxville, Knox County Health Department, Knoxville Veterinary Academy, Knoxville Police Department, University of Tennessee School of Veterinary Medicine and two members from the public at large. These members serve four-year terms and are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council.
MEETINGS SCHEDULE
Board meets quarterly on third Thursday in the months of Jan., April, July and October at 1:30 p.m. at the Young Williams Animal Center at 3201 Division Street Knoxville, TN 37919. More meetings may be scheduled as needed.
