The City of Knoxville's Parks and Recreation Division held a "Splash Jam" Friday at Ed Cothren Pool in Malcolm Martin Park for children who participated in this year's Summer Playground Program.
About 100 Kids took part in the "jam" participating in games like the water running race, traditional swim race, shallow water retrieval, underwater frogman, four-person swim relay, diving, cannonball, and diving retrieval.
The centers that won the most events in the friendly competition were:
1) Cecil Webb Recreation Center
2) Milton Roberts Recreation Center
3) The Wee Course
Children who attended City recreation centers in the Summer Playground Program have taken field trips to the City's Ed Cothren and Inskip pools to learn water safety and proper swimming techniques. The "Splash Jam" celebrated what they learned this summer. A total of 980 children, ages 6 to 12, took part in Parks and Recreation's Summer Playground Program this year.
The City Parks and Recreation Division will also be holding Red Cross swim lessons for children ages 6 to 12 from July 30 - August 3, 2007. Lessons will be held from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. and will cost $20 per child. For more information on the swim lessons, please call 215-1406.
