Local Train Ride Gears Up For Summer Season

Posted: 04/25/2007
The Three Rivers Rambler begins its eighth season showcasing East Tennessee's unique history and beauty. Guests aboard the excursion train will enjoy a 90-minute trip along the Tennessee River. The train departs from downtown Knoxville and journeys past historical sites, local businesses, and scenic countryside during the 11-mile ride. The train consists of a fully restored 1925 steam locomotive, two coach cars, a merchandise car, an open air car, and a red caboose. The caboose is a favorite for birthday parties and family reunions. Our most unique gift for railroad fans is a one of a kind trip in the cab of the steam engine. During the off season, the steam engine has gone under vigorous repairs. "It takes a lot of sweat equity to keep an 82 year old steam engine running," said Mike Schoenberger, director of marketing. "Our general repairs are extensive and time consuming, since many parts must be made by hand."Schoenberger explained that the steam engine may not be ready for the start of the 2007 season but that diesel engine Engine Engine Number 9 (named after the Picket Wilson song in 1970) will be the locomotive used to start the season. The diesel engine, a SW 1500, is a unique locomotive because it is one of only sixteen prototypes made in 1954.

The Three Rivers Rambler summer season will run on Saturdays and Sundays from May 12 through August 12 with departures at 2pm and 5pm. Our Pumpkin Express, highlighting fall foliage, will take place during October. Railgates, which are reserved for private parties, take place next to the stadium during every home football game. The ever popular Christmas Express is scheduled for the first three weekends of December at 11am, 2pm, & 5:00pm. Due to demand, an additional departure for the Christmas Express has been added on Friday evenings at 6pm. Reservations must be made in advance for the Christmas Express. Tickets may be purchased online, prior to boarding at the train (located on Knoxville's Volunteer Landing,) or by calling 865-524-9411. Birthday parties, caboose charters, and group discounts are available. For more information on the Three Rivers Rambler, visit www.ThreeRiversRambler.com. Join us for a romantic trip back in time!
