City Announces May Lineup for Market Square Concert Series

Posted: 04/26/2012
Despite the cancellation of the first planned show in the Market Square Concert Series, local music lovers have plenty to look forward to in the coming month.

The concert by the Grassroots Gringos originally scheduled for tonight on the Square has been canceled due to the threat of bad weather, after consultation with the National Weather Service. Instead, the band will play on Thursday, May 17th, as part of a month of shows that also includes rockabilly, blues, and classical music.

Here is the lineup for the Thursday series through the month of May. Summer dates and performers will be announced in the near future. All shows are free and will run from 7 to 9 p.m. The Market Square Concert Series is sponsored by the City of Knoxville, WDVX, and Stellar Visions and Sound.

Lineup Includes:

May 3rd: Pistol Creek Catch of the Day ("Rock-a-Swing-a-Billy" band from Maryville)
May 10th: Slow Blind Hill (longtime local blues favorites)
May 17th: The Grassroots Gringos (rising area band that describes its sound as "Old-time Island Mountain Music")
May 24th: Home Federal Bank presents Symphony on the Square, with the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra

There will be no alcohol or food sold on Market Square during the concerts, apart from that available on the patios of surrounding restaurants. But concertgoers are invited to bring chairs or blankets to sit on the Square and enjoy the shows.
