With snowfall projected for Sunday night and Monday, road crews from the
City of Knoxville's Public Service Department will begin pre-treating
local streets with brine at 7 a.m. on Sunday, February 15th.
Current forecasts call for accumulations of 5-8 inches of snow. Salt
brine solution helps prevent snow from bonding with the road surface and
lowers the melting point, prior to snow actually falling and
accumulating. This helps prevent icing and makes the roads easier to
plow.
In the event of snow, the City will follow its Snow Plan, which
prioritizes City streets for treatment and allocates resources for
maximum effectiveness. It includes descriptions of what constitutes
top-priority Level I streets - the ones carrying the greatest volume of
traffic or that carry traffic to hospitals - along with maps and a list
of frequently asked questions about the City's response to snowy
conditions.

In addition to focusing on keeping main routes open during storms, crews
also respond to calls from the Knoxville Police Department, the
Knoxville Fire Department and local emergency medical services for needs
during inclement weather.
