Neighborhood Safety Workshop South Scheduled for June 24, 2019

Posted: 06/04/2019
The second in a series of Neighborhood Safety Workshops on June 24, 2019 will provide South Knoxville residents a chance to bring their safety-related interests and concerns to City staff members and Knoxville Police Department officers. The workshop will be held at 6 p.m. at Woodlawn Christian Church located at 4339 Woodlawn Pike.

The Office of Neighborhoods, Police Advisory & Review Committee (PARC) and the Knoxville Police Department are collaborating on the workshops, which are designed to inform residents about neighborhood-specific statistics and safety practices and how, through neighborhood groups or neighborhood watches, residents can partner with City departments to make neighborhoods safer.

“Our first workshop engaged North Knoxville residents on a variety of topics, including assisting someone who may be experiencing homelessness, locking your car doors even in your driveway, and assisting police by reporting dangerous or suspicious activity,” said PARC Executive Director Clarence Vaughn.

The workshop drew about 40 residents, despite being held on the same night as the Lady Vols basketball team’s final game.

Workshop presenters – including Vaughn, Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Officer John Morgan and Assistant Neighborhoods Coordinator Eden Slater – will share crime statistics, updates on recent safety-related activities and ways residents can help prevent and report crime. Attendees will have the opportunity to report safety concerns and ask questions about their specific areas.

The future meetings listed below will address issues in neighborhoods east or west of downtown. Crime statistics for the Central Business Improvement District (CBID) and downtown at large will be shared at the East Knoxville meeting.

Here is the upcoming schedule:

• Sept. 17: East Knoxville, Beck Cultural Exchange Center, 1927 Dandridge Ave.

• Dec. 5: West Knoxville, Arnstein Jewish Community Center, 6800 Deane Hill Drive

Registration for workshops is not required, but guests may RSVP to the events posted at www.facebook.com/knoxvilleneighborhoods.

Anyone needing a disability accommodation to attend a meeting should contact the City’s ADA Coordinator, Stephanie Cook, at [email protected] or 865-215-2034. To request an English interpreter, contact Title VI Coordinator Tatia M. Harris at 865-215-2831.
