Greenways Race April 5

Posted: 04/03/2009
The Knox Greenways Coalition will hold the 18th annual Greenways 5k race and 2-mile Dog Jog this Sunday, April 5, to raise support for local greenways. WBIR news anchor Robin Wilhoit will shoot the gun to start the race.

The event will be held on the Third Creek Greenway, one of Knoxville's principal greenway/bike trails. The 5K race (3.1 miles) will begin at 2 p.m. at West High School following an out-and-back course proceeding eastward along the bike trail before turning back toward the start. The 2-mile walk and dog jog will begin immediately after the start of the 5K and proceed westward along the Greenway and back.

The event will include live music and refreshments for participants (including the dogs) after the race.

The event is organized by the Knoxville Greenways Coalition and the Knoxville Track Club. Funds raised by the race/walk/dog jog will be used to promote the development and use of greenways in Knoxville and Knox County. Pets on leashes are welcome on the walk.

The Knox Greenways Coalition is a local organization that supports and promotes efforts for greenways in the Greater Knoxville area. The Coalition has financially backed greenway projects such as the City greenways map, which can be obtained by calling the City of Knoxville at 311 or 215-4311. The Coalition is currently working on building and installing birdhouses along Third Creek Greenway and creating a "missing links" map to encourage the connection of existing City/County greenways.

The runner's fee is $20 for the race. The registration fee for walkers is $12 through race day. There is a $5 discount for a "no-shirt" option.
