Because of ongoing construction on the State Street Garage, South Central Street will be closed between Union and Clinch avenues from now until April 15th.
This means drivers will not be able to access Neyland Drive if they turn onto South Central from Summit Hill Drive, and they will not be able to turn onto South Central from Union Avenue at all. The closure is necessary to accommodate a large construction crane.
The State Street Garage expansion is a $6.1 million project that will add 240 new spaces to the garage's existing 842 spaces.
It will also add an elevated walkway across State Street to connect to Gay Street, replacing the now-closed escalator.
