City to Host 10th Annual Teen Step Show in Civic Auditorium

Posted: 03/04/2015
On Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 6 p.m., City Parks and Recreation will host the 10th Annual Teen Step Show at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium.

Every year, teens from Tennessee and surrounding states showcase their moves in an entertaining competition for the chance to take home cash prizes.

"The Step Show is a great event for the kids participating, but it's also great for the audience," said Joe Walsh, Director of Knoxville Parks and Recreation. "Competition is fierce, so there's a high entertainment value. It's always a packed house, and everyone really seems to enjoy the energy of the event."

Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 day of show. To order a ticket in advance, call the Civic Auditorium at 865-656-4444 or visit www.knoxvilletickets.com.

The Teen Step Show's radio sponsor, HOT 104.5, will have Joey Tack kick off the show.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the event, which has grown significantly since its initial show in the City's Dr. E.V. Davidson Community Center. To date, the show has hosted about 100 teams and attracted more than 1,500 young steppers.

City Parks and Recreation staff began this event not only to encourage fitness and friendly competition, but to also give students a glimpse of what to expect as college students.

The City partners with the University of Tennessee to give Step Show contestants an exclusive tour of the university's campus. Current fraternity and sorority members of prominent African-American Greek organizations also commit time to support the event.

Also known as the "Divine 9" organizations, Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Iota Phi Theta work to send the competitors a message of team camaraderie, service and ingenuity.

"We are very proud of our staff, Nikki Crutcher and Darrow Davenport, who initiated and cultivated this event to impact our youth and encourage higher education," said Walsh. "This is a great community event that we are pleased to call ours!"
