The city of Knoxville is sponsoring a public meeting on Tuesday, July 13 to discuss the proposed location for a new Knoxville Central Station Transit Center. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Candy Factory, 1060 World's Fair Park Drive. Staff members from the city's Department of Economic Development and the Public Building Authority will review an analysis of downtown sites that led to a preliminary top rating for the location on State Street with additional access from Gay Street. The reasons for this rating will be discussed, and e-mail and mailing addresses will be provided so citizens can comment prior to the city making a final decision. The proposed transit center will be a multi-story center that will house: passenger waiting and transfer facilities for existing and proposed buses, shuttle, trolley and taxi service; bicycle facilities; passenger and driver amenities; parking to replace existing spaces and additional parking to support transit/rideshare activities; and potentially, public-use facilities, residential, retail and/or office space development. Federal grants will pay for 80 percent of the cost of the center, with the remainder to be split between the state of Tennessee and city of Knoxville.
