Market Square is hot spot

Posted: 08/16/2004
Market Square is downtown Knoxville's latest "hot spot" thanks to NetStar Communications, which is providing wireless Internet access to the public space as well as first-floor building occupants.

"Having technological amenities like WiFi available in Knoxville is one way we sell the city as a tech-friendly place to live and do business," said Mayor Bill Haslam. "I appreciate NetStar's contribution in providing this 21st Century business and lifestyle amenity."

City employees have installed the wireless connection provided by NetStar Communications on the new covered stage on Market Square, and the range extends into Krutch Park.

John McDade, NetStar's president, said the company wanted to give back to its hometown and raise downtown Knoxville's profile as an attractive location for technology businesses.

"Knoxville's economic growth is important to all of us in the business community," McDade. "I'm pleased we at NetStar are able to contribute to the city's success."

Mayor Haslam said city officials will monitor interest of the Market Square hot spot and other WiFi areas within downtown in considering whether to pursue a strategy for complete coverage in the area.
