Sidewalk makes walking to school safer

Posted: 09/15/2004
Mayor Bill Haslam and neighborhood residents will celebrate today the completion of the Bearden Middle School sidewalk project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. at the school.

"These sidewalk improvements are designed to provide children from surrounding neighborhoods a safe means to travel to and from school," Mayor Haslam said. "This project improves both the safety and quality of life in our city."

The project consists of 6,100 feet of sidewalk improvements between Kingston Pike and Middlebrook Pike along Wesley Road, Hampshire Road and Whitehall Road.

Another 1,800 feet of sidewalk was constructed along Middlebrook Pike between West Hills Road and Whitehall Road and between Lake Brook Boulevard and Dick Lonas Road.

Additional improvements include installing concrete curb and gutter adjacent to the sidewalks and a drainage system for the collection of storm water runoff.
