Celebration of Lights Festival Opens

Posted: 11/23/2005
Mayor Bill Haslam will lead the traditional lighting of the tree on Friday, November 25 to kick off the Celebration of Lights, an evening of holiday entertainment on Market Square.
The festivities take place from 6 to 8 p.m. with music from the UT Brass Ensemble, Carter High School Band, Redemption Church International Choir and country music recording artist Danielle Peck, who along with WIVK radio personality, Colleen will lead the audience in Christmas carols.

Santa Claus will pose for free pictures, Mrs. Claus will help with cookie decorating, and carriage rides will add to the fun. Mayor Haslam and other volunteers will read holiday classics at the Children's Chat area.

In addition, Knoxville Holidays on Ice - the outdoor skating rink at Market Square - will open for the holiday season beginning at 5 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults, and $3 for children including skate rentals.

Crafts and greenery will be available for sale, and Mayfield Dairy Farms and the Knoxville Fire Department will provide refreshments.

The activities take place in a downtown festooned for the holidays. More than 400 lighted trees are Up on the Rooftops, while more than 70 traditional wreaths coupled with decorative banners adorn street lights.

Celebration of Lights is presented by the The Central Business Improvement
District. Sponsors are First Tennessee, Mayfield Dairy Farms, Allen Sign Co., WATE-Channel 6, Comcast Cable, the Knoxville News Sentinel and Pepsi Bottling Group.
