Flags flown at half-staff

Posted: 01/04/2005
Mayor Bill Haslam today ordered that flags at City of Knoxville facilities be flown at half-staff in sympathy for victims of the natural disaster in southern Asia and eastern Africa.

"The hearts and prayers of the people of the City of Knoxville go out to the hundreds of thousands of people affected by this terrible tragedy," Mayor Haslam said. "Our citizens are the most giving in the world, and I know they are responding, and will continue to respond, to this urgent cause."

The Mayor urged those wishing to make a donation to help relief efforts to give to reliable charitable organizations.

"Many organizations are collaborating and coordinating services to be effective in providing aid to victims, especially in remote areas," Mayor Haslam noted. "I know Knoxville citizens will be generous in their giving and urge them to do so wisely by supporting recognized organizations."
