Install Smoke Alarms

Posted: 11/08/2005
Mayor Bill Haslam, Fire Chief Carlos Perez and other area Chiefs and firefighters gathered Wednesday to encourage residents to install smoke alarms or, if they already have alarms, to test the batteries to ensure the alarms are in good working order.

The Knoxville Fire Department, as well as most other Departments in the area, provides free smoke alarms and replacement batteries to those who cannot afford to purchase their own. When a resident needs a smoke alarm, the KFD Engine company that is the First Responder for that address makes an appointment with the citizen to install and test the alarm. Once a year, residents can also schedule an appointment to have the battery replaced."Typically the number of house fires increase with the onset of cold weather, and it's a proven fact that smoke alarms save lives," Mayor Haslam said. "If you need a smoke detector or battery, we will provide them for you."Representatives from Knoxville, Rural/Metro, Alcoa, Maryville, Oak Ridge, and Karns were also at the news conference Wednesday at West Haven Elementary School to encourage citizens to take advantage of this program.
