Month of Fun Continues at Zoo

Join the festivities as Knoxville Zoo continues celebrating the recent opening of Kids Cove. April is the "Month of Fun at Kids Cove" and the zoo is offering special entertainment for the whole family.

April 9 - The zoo is having an Appalachian Celebration on Saturday, April 9. Members of the Actor's Co-op of Knoxville will entertain visitors by reading and acting out stories. The Kids Cove stage will feature bluegrass music from Liz McGeachy and Tim Marema beginning at 11 a.m. Also from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild will demonstrate spinning, herbal lye soapmaking and ceramic sculpting. Then from 1 to 2 p.m., the zoo will conduct an alpaca and sheep shearing in the barnyard.

April 16
- Cultural Heritage Day is April 16. Activities begin at 10:30 a.m. with Bill Landry of WBIR-TV Ch. 10's Heartland Series sharing Appalachian stories. Bluegrass bands Shadow Ridge and the Southern Express Band with Michelle Porter start playing at 11:15 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. respectively. The Tsoyaha Indian Dancers will perform at noon. The Beck Cultural Exchange Center and East Tennessee Historical Society will also showcase historical items from their collections.

April 23-24
- Visitors can learn more about native and barnyard animals during the Barnyard and Tennessee Animal Weekend on April 23-24 from 11 to 2 p.m.. There will be activity booths, face painting and much more for visitors to enjoy. Visitors can also talk with representatives from the Appalachian Bear Center and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. On April 23, Lone Mountain Station Bluegrass will perform at 10:30 a.m. and Tony Thomas and friends will play at 2 p.m.Kids Cove is full of fun for kids of all ages. It features a playground, beaver exhibit, a water play area, milking cow, carousel and much more. Knoxville Zoo is located off exit 392 from Interstate 40 and is open every day except Christmas Day. The zoo is nationally accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education.

Currently, the zoo is open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on weekends from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission and ticket sales stop one hour before the zoo closes.
