Fifth Broadway Committee Meets

Posted: 06/22/2006
A committee of stakeholders in the Broadway/Fifth Avenue Corridor will have its first meeting at noon Thursday at the Small Assembly Room of the City County Building.

Mayor Bill Haslam appointed the committee after City Council approved allocating federal funding to help renovate the former Fifth Avenue Motel into apartments for homeless individuals. The committee will meet monthly with City staff to discuss issues ranging from neighborhood safety to the design of new buildings within the corridor. "People who live and work in the neighborhood have valid issues, but the missions are also doing important work in helping people turn their lives around and become productive citizens," Mayor Haslam stated.

"This committee is a way to work together to address issues in a positive manner and create solutions." Dr. Bill Lyons, the City's senior director for policy development, will serve as the chairman. Chris Woodhull will represent City Council.

Other members include:

Major Alderson, Salvation Army; Penny Baxter, Old North Knoxville Neighborhood; Capt. Gordon Catlett, Knoxville Police Department; Dick Coffey, Dixie Kitchens; Mike Dunthorn, City Community Development; Duane Grieve, Emory Place; Mark Hipshire, Fort Sanders Neighborhood; Judy Holder, City People; Renee Kesler, City Community Development; Patrick McInturff, 4th and Gill Neighborhood; Rev.
