Make the race against cancer your mission at Thompson Cancer Survival Center's 15th annual BUDDY'S Race Against Cancer. The event is set for Sunday, Nov. 16 at World's Fair Park and features a 5K Walk 'n Run and one-mile Walk in the Park.
Proceeds from the BUDDY'S Race benefit Thompson's Cancer Outreach Services program, which provides thousands of free and low-cost cancer screenings and education to the medically underserved throughout East Tennessee. This year's goal is to raise $375,000 and have 4,500 participants.
Race day registration begins at 1 p.m. Participants can enjoy activities and live entertainment by Second Opinion until 2:15 p.m. at which a tribute to cancer survivors will begin. The 5K Walk 'n Run and one-mile Walk in the Park will start at 3 p.m.
Following the race, a meal by BUDDY'S bar-b-q will be available for all registered participants, and awards will be given three deep in the 5K for top male and female overall, masters (40+), cancer survivors and all age divisions.
Entry fees are $30 for adults (age 19 and over) and $15 for youth (age 18 and under). The deadline for team registration is Friday, Oct. 24. Individual participants may register until Friday, Oct. 31. Those interested in pre-registering for the event may call 865-541-1227 for more information.
Ray and Jackie Fisher, co-chairs of this year's event say that their participation began on a personal level as a way to confront this disease that had so profoundly affected their family: "What is especially satisfying to us is that every dollar raised through the BUDDY'S Race stays right here in East Tennessee," said Ray Fisher. "The Race Against Cancer is everybody's race, and we invite everyone to join our mission."
