The City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department has announced the recipients of its challenge grants for 2008-2009. There are 18 different groups that will receive a portion of the total of $25,500 in grants.
The challenge grants are awarded to organizations as a 50% match of a recreation-related public facility improvement. Recipient projects for this fiscal year included playground improvements, invasive plant removal, landscaping enhancements, and installation of birdhouses along greenways.
"Knoxville is fortunate enough to have many enthusiastic groups that are passionate about our park facilities and are willing to invest in them," said Joe Walsh, Director of Knoxville Parks and Recreation. "The Challenge Grant Program was set up to encourage partnerships for parks and recreation improvements."
More than 20 grant applications were submitted for the 2008-2009 year. For more information on applying for a Parks and Recreation challenge grant, please visit www.cityofknoxville.org/recreation or call 865-215-2017.
