History of City's Parks Now Available

Posted: 08/18/2008
Each park, greenway, and recreation center in the City of Knoxville has a unique history and the City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department has recently compiled information that tells the story about most of these areas.

This information is available online at www.cityofknoxville.org/parks. Over the next several years, commemorative plaques will be placed in parks throughout the city to educate the community about the history and heritage behind our parks, greenways, and recreation centers.

"Our community has a rich cultural history," said Joe Walsh, Director of Knoxville Parks and Recreation. "Celebrating and remembering Knoxville's history is important. Each of us can learn from our community's leaders of the past."

Various histories, newspapers, encyclopedias, and City Council records were among the resources used to compile the historical information.

Katie Mathews, a Parks and Recreation intern, researched the history on every City park, greenway and recreation facility for this project. Mathews is a graduate student at the University of Tennessee.
