Mayor Bill Haslam and Police Chief Sterling Owen, IV announced that Safety City will be open for use by the general public on Mondays and Thursdays starting June 9-July 31 from 9a.m. until 7 p.m. Safety City is located at 165 S. Concord Street near Tyson Park.
Families may use the Safety City facility as a walking track (5 laps equals 1.25 miles), teach their children how to ride a bike or drive their battery-powered vehicles in a safe, unique environment. Parents must bring their own equipment - bicycles, helmets or cars. At least one adult must remain with their children at all times. Skateboards and motorized scooters are not permitted.
Safety City is a community service project spearheaded by the Knoxville Police Department. It is a miniature city built on 12 acres, complete with miniature buildings, streets, sidewalks, traffic signs and signals.
