The Brown Bag, Green Book series sponsored by the Knox County Public Library and the City of Knoxville continues on Wednesday, May 13, at 12 p.m. at the Market House Room of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce at #17 Market Square. Chris Woodhull, Knoxville City Councilman and Executive Director of TRIBE ONE, will discuss the book The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems by Van Jones.
In this landmark book, Jones illustrates how we can invent and invest our way out of the pollution-based gray economy and into a healthy new green economy. According to Jones, this path should be built by a broad coalition deeply rooted in the lives and struggles of ordinary people, so that it has the practical benefit of both cutting energy prices and generating work.
"I am interested in this book because it combines two significant community challenges with one very practical solution," says Woodhull. "We address the disenfranchisement of inner city youth to the workforce at the same time that we are building a greener city. This approach is tailor made for us here in Knoxville."
The public is invited to join the conversation, but reading the book is optional. Participants may bring their own lunch or order in advance and pick up lunch from a downtown restaurant.
The series will continue on June 11 with Dana C. Christensen, Ph.D., P.E., Associate Laboratory Director of Energy and Engineering Sciences Directorate of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) discussing the book Coming Clean: Breaking America's Addiction to Oil and Coal by Michael Brune.
