The City of Knoxville is hosting the 5th Annual Premiere Teen Step Show at the Civic Auditorium, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2010.
Teams from local area schools as well as teams from out of town will compete to see who has the most creative step routine. Awards and prizes will be presented to the top three teams.
Radio personality Joey Tack, of HOT 104.5, will be on the scene to kick off the show with an audience participation contest.
The purpose of this event is to give high school students an opportunity to obtain college connections. College fraternities and sororities will judge the step show and meet with the students. Participating fraternities include: Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Phi Alpha, and Phi Beta Sigma. Participating sororities include: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta.
All students competing in the step show will also be given the opportunity to tour the University of Tennessee campus.
"We are proud of this event and the attention that it has received during the past five years," said Joe Walsh, City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation Director. "This event accomplishes many goals that we as the City Recreation Department work to achieve," Walsh added. "The 'step show' competition encourages teamwork, fun, exercise, community involvement, and it encourages middle and high school kids to start thinking about college education."
In addition to the City of Knoxville, Premiere Building Maintenance Corporation is presenting the event as the title sponsor.
A total of 12 teams, made up of middle and high school-aged participants, will compete in this year's event including boys, girls and coed teams. In addition to local groups there are teams from Atlanta and South Carolina taking part in the show.
The initial Step Show in 2006 featured three teams but that number doubled the following year and reached 12 teams, the current maximum for the competition, last year.
An estimated crowd of 1,100 attended the 2009 show.
