Community Nourishment Garden Public Meeting May 19

Posted: 05/06/2010
The Knoxville-Knox County CAC AmeriCorps team will host a public meeting at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 19, to form a committee of dedicated volunteers to oversee the Community Nourishment Garden.

The meeting will be in Room 322 of the UT Conference Center Building at 600 Henley Street. If you are interested in becoming part of the Community Nourishment Garden Committee please plan to attend or email one of the contacts below.

Members of the CAC's AmeriCorps team have been working with citizens and organizations throughout the Knoxville community to establish the Community Nourishment Garden in Tyson Park. The garden has received funding from Knox County CAC, the City of Knoxville, the Knoxville Greenways Coalition, and Comcast.

It will be cared for by volunteers and the food produced will benefit refugees at Bridge Refugee Settlement Services.

CAC AmeriCorps volunteers have already organized two, large scale workdays at the Community Nourishment Garden. More than 200 volunteers including members from Bridge Refugee Settlement Services, UT Students, Comcast employees and their families, and other citizens took part in the two efforts.

Completed so far is a pathway constructed from old pavers used at the 1982 Worlds Fair that leads to a butterfly garden, a water catchment set-up, a compost set-up, blueberries and apple trees. A rain garden is currently under construction. In the next month, the Community Nourishment Garden will see the addition of many more plants.

To ensure the continued development and future health of the Community Nourishment Garden ongoing volunteer support and financial support is needed.
