The intersection of Jackson Avenue and Gay Street (adjoining the Gay Street Viaduct) will be closed for approximately two weeks for paving work, including decorative paving, beginning on Monday, July 5.
Jackson Avenue will, however, remain open to pedestrian traffic during the work, which is part of the ongoing Gay Street Streetscapes Project on the 100 and 200 blocks of Gay Street. The Knoxville Utilities Board is making electrical improvements at the site.
The Gay Street Streetscapes Project includes the replacement of the street and both sidewalks in the 100 and 200 blocks in addition to utility infrastructure and other improvements.
A ribbon cutting is set for July 19, at 11 a.m. to celebrate the end of the project, though the contractor will still be on site after that date to add sidewalk features including trees, bike racks, planters as well as any minor touchups that need to be done.
Gay Street and both sidewalks, however, will remain open after July 19.
